Dr. Thomas Gordon Starkey-Smith

Dr. Thomas Gordon Starkey-Smith MD, BS Lond, MRCS, LRCP  1880 – 1937
A Lancastrian who studied medicine and qualified at St. Thomas’ Hospital, London. He practiced medicine in Hungerford from 1910 to 1936, living at the Manor House, Hungerford. At the outbreak of World War One he was heavily involved in the war effort as Hungerford was a military station and mobilisation point.

Other notable achievements:

  • He was Constable of the town 1932 – 1935
  • President of the Hungerford Club
  • A good cricketer

He died on 23rd December, 1937 after a long illness

Masonic Career:

  • He was initiated into Hope Lodge on 7th December, 1915 and its Worshipful Master in 1924
  • He was the founding Worshipful Master of Hungerford Lodge No. 4748 on 30th September, 1925 by which time he was already Past Provincial Grand Warden.
